Act Creation with Empress Stah
Sunday 16th February | 4:00pm to 6:00pm
‘Aerial Performance in CabarART’ is a workshop in creating contemporary cabaret with an aerial performance woven into it. This class will work on a group act creation piece, that will teach the fundamentals of performance design. The piece will act as an example that students can apply to their own acts, adopting techniques and structure of conceptualisation, realisation and application.
More Information
The workshop will commence with a talk from Empress Stah, describing her work and what she means by CabarART. Stah will show a video of one of her more infamous acts, and talk about where the inspiration came from and how the ideas were built up to create the finished pieces.
A week before the workshop commences, Stah will give all students one musical track, that will form the centre piece of the act that we will collectively create. Students will be asked to listen to the track, think about what it means to them and how they might interpret it as part of a performance. Students will then take this inspiration and choose a piece of costume and a prop or two, that they would like to work with on the day.
Students will be covering specifically how to build an aerial routine into a cabaret performance that may also have ground based moments. It will incorporate character, narrative and flow, with focus on creating something original, memorable and bookable.
Empress Stah will touch on the implications of rigging in different venues, how to make the act adaptable and how to ensure it is safe.
The second part of the workshop will involve a physical warm up and taking the ideas onto the floor and into the air. The small class size will mean each student will get their ideas heard and feel part of the group devising process.
This workshop is intended to give students solid ideas around creating an original act, it’s not an aerial tricks workshop, nor should they expect to leave with a finished piece.

$120 for a 2 hour workshop.
